Towards an integrative and comprehensive standard for meta-omics data of collection objects (MOD-CO)

DFG RA 731/16-1

From 05/2014 to 12/2017

Principal Investigator: Gerhard Rambold
Staff: Janno Harjes

While a number of standards exist for depositing molecular sequence and array data, a comprehensive schema for connecting meta-omics data to reference samples in natural history and living culture collections has long been missing. The MOD-CO project (Meta-Omics Data and Collection Objects), developed by Gerhard Rambold and collaborators, fills this gap by introducing a structured conceptual model that enables the standardized association of meta-omics datasets with physical collection objects. The MOD-CO schema combines controlled vocabularies and descriptors that capture the full range of observational data, measurement elements, and procedural steps used in meta-omics studies. This framework enhances traceability and interoperability and facilitates more robust and reproducible biodiversity research. The model has been implemented within the Diversity Workbench and the SILVA/megx.net platform, in cooperation with the TDWG and GSC standardization bodies. This work is complemented by a workflow for the standardized collection of environmental vouchers, including UUID assignment and image documentation, published by Triebel, Rambold, and others in 2018. In a further contribution, Harjes, Rambold, and colleagues emphasized the importance of embedding workflow design and method documentation into FAIR digital objects to improve the repeatability and reproducibility of environmental and life sciences research. Together, these efforts represent a comprehensive approach to making meta-omics data in biodiversity research better structured, reusable, and aligned with international standards.
