Fagus leaves-inhabiting fungi and their impact on leaf decomposition

From 12/2010 to 07/2012Principal Investigator: Gerhard Rambold
Staff: Derek Peršoh, Julia Segert
In their study on leaf litter decomposition in European beech forests, D. Peršoh, J. Segert, and G. Rambold analyzed how fungal communities change along a degradation gradient. They found that endophytic fungi present in living Fagus sylvatica leaves persist and remain functionally relevant during decomposition in the forest floor. The research highlights the ecological continuity between living plant tissues and soil fungal communities and suggests that endophytes may serve as early decomposers.
