Evolution of phenotypic traits in the lichen family Umbilicariaceae (lichenized Ascomycota): evaluating new markers for obtaining a better resolved phylogenetic topology

DFG RA 731/13-1

From 11/2012 to 10/2017

Principal Investigator: Gerhard Rambold
Staff: Evgeny Davydov

The collaborative work of E. A. Davydov, D. Peršoh, and G. Rambold significantly advanced the systematics and taxonomy of the lichen family Umbilicariaceae. Through phylogenetic analyses and morphological character evolution, they proposed a new generic concept for the group, offering a clearer classification framework based on both genetic and phenotypic data. Their studies led to the recombination of Lasallia caroliniana and redefined the boundaries of the genus Lasallia, contributing to a better understanding of generic delimitation within the family. Together, these findings highlight the importance of integrative approaches in fungal systematics, combining molecular phylogenetics with detailed morphological assessments to clarify evolutionary relationships and taxonomic classifications in lichenized fungi.
